This textbook on Social Dimensions of Education is designed to meet the needs of future teachers and practicing teachers. This is in response to CHED Memorandum No. 30, s. 2004, mandating the adoption of a New Teacher Education Curriculum for Bachelor of Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education in the Philippines. With this new curriculum, Social Dimensions of Education emerged as one of the new subjects that will be included in the education program for prospective elementary and secondary teachers. Essentially, the book is a modest attempt to impart the appreciation of human differences through education that provides alternatives for maximum involvement in a pluralistic society and in the making of a better, just, and humane world. The course is designed to prepare future teachers for the wide diversity of students whom they are certain to encounter in their classrooms, schools, communities, and global society. This is based on the assumption that the change must occur with regard to diversity in schools begins at the level of the individual teacher. It also assumes that teachers must learn to incorporate issues of diversity in all of their teaching, including, but not limited to their interactions with children, parents, other teachers, and the community.
The book is designed for a semester’s study and is basically meant an overview of Sociology of Education and Social Foundations of Education. For students majoring in social science, the topics discussed would be easy for them to grasp because the key concepts of social science in this book are contextualized in education setting. In a way, previous knowledge they have acquired in their field will be very useful and relevant to the subject.
