<a href="CABUDBOD, MARY JOY C., ESTAVILLO, SHANE I., MACATANGAY, NICO T., AND SAN JUAN, KIMBERLY JOY G. Development of Reverse Vending Machine: Bottle and Can Crusher. A Project Design. Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering. Cavite State University-Rosario, Rosario, Cavite. February 2015. Thesis adviser: Engr. Raiza D. Borreo. Technical critic: Diane P. Arayata.

The study, Development of Reverse Vending Machine: Bottle and Can Crusher, was conducted in Cavite from January 2014 to February 2015. Specifically, the study aimed to: 1.) design the system of reverse vending machine: bottle and can crusher, 2.) evaluate the performance of reverse vending machine: bottle and can crusher using software and hardware evaluation instrument, 3.) implement the reverse vending machine: bottle and can crusher in the community.

The Reverse Vending Machine: Bottle and Can Crusher followed the iterative model development process. It began with planning to determine the features needed in constructing a reverse vending machine such as the detection, manner of crushing the cans and bottles, dispensing and the materials to be used. The prototype is comprised of sensors that identifies whether PET or can was inserted; pneumatics was used as the method of crushing and moving of parts through solenoid valves and air cylinders; servos were also added to move flaps, and LCD and buttons were added for user interface. These components were programmed to GizDuino X microcontroller to control the coordination of sensors and mechanical parts. The developers used alpha testing to check for errors. Beta testing was also conducted to check the system’s efficiency.

There were a total of 150 participants who observed and evaluated the project which consisted of 60 students from the 4" year high school students of Rosario National High School, 20 local residents, 40 students from the 1st year Associate of Technology major in Welding and Fabrication and 30 students from the 1st year Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology. Results of evaluation showed that the prototype is an effective tool for motivating people to take an active part in recycling.

The Reverse Vending Machine: Bottle and Can Crusher can crush 160 to 170 aluminum cans and PET bottles in one hour. The machine is limited to empty bottles and cans that has 3 (7.62 cm) inches in diameter and has a maximum height of 6 inches (15.24 cm). Every bottle or can inserted and crushed in the machine is equivalent to one token. The total rate of materials used and services rendered is P30, 320.00.

Moreover, the Reverse Vending Machine: Bottle and Can Crusher is recommended to have a more appealing design by using touch screen technology as user interface and make use of bigger cylinders for the bottles and cans to be more compact when crushed.

">CABUDBOD, MARY JOY C., ESTAVILLO, SHANE I., MACATANGAY, NICO T., AND SAN JUAN, KIMBERLY JOY G.
